FameLab Competition 2017

The British Council, with the support of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and in collaboration with Scico Cyprus, announce the opening of the FameLab 2017 national contest. Following the huge international success of previous national competitions, including a first place, a second place and qualifications to the finals of the international competition, FameLab® is looking for new talents in science communication, able to present a scientific topic in front of a live audience, in just three minutes.

The competition was “born” in the British Cheltenham Science Festival in order to take science outside the classroom, to turn it into a fun activity and to encourage young people to share their passion for science and technology.

The competition aims to encourage young and older scientists, to inspire and to excite the audience’s imagination for the science of the 21st century. We are searching for the new faces of science in Cyprus, who will be able to develop their ideas and communication skills in front of a jury and an audience. The competition is open to anyone older than 18, who studies or is employed in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics or medicine. Undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, professors, scientists and researchers are eligible to join.

The 10 contestants that will qualify to the finals will win a participation for a 2-day “MasterClass” science communication workshop. The first 3 winners will receive €1000, €500 and €250 respectively. The big winner of the competition will represent Cyprus in the grand international final which takes place in Cheltenham (UK) in June. Participants can compete in Greek or English. The language of the international final at Cheltenham is English and the evaluation criteria are the charm, the content and the clarity of the presentation of each contestant.

Contest dates:

The final Cyprus will be broadcast live on CyBC (RIK) in May 2017.
